On Continuum – A Talk for Children*

Let me thank you, the teachers, for inviting me and giving me this opportunity to speak to the children. And let me thank you, the students, in advance, for listening to me. You are very fortunate to have teachers who inspire you and challenge you to learn about and think about things that are simple yet deep, challenging yet meaningful. When Paramitaji asked me to speak about this topic – continuum – to young minds like you, I thought it is an inspiring and a challenging idea. And I thought, let me give it a try. I took it seriously enough to write down the things I have to say to you. Talking to children is no child’s play, especially when you have to speak on such a topic and have to do so in twenty minutes. I must be accurate, and precise, and honest, to the best of my ability.

ਮਾਨਵਤਾ ਦਾ ਕਲਿਆਣ‎,‎ ਸੁਥਰੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਜਾਣ

ਜਦੋਂ ਸੋਚ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦਾ ਹਰ ਬੱਚਾ ਹੀ ਵਿਲੱਖਣ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਵਿਚਾਰੀ ਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਿਲੱਖਣਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਕੇ‎,‎ ਉਸਾਰ ਕੇ ਜੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਾਣ ਵੀ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਨਵਤਾ ਦਾ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਵੀ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਲੱਖਣਤਾ ਸਬੰਧੀ ਦੋ ਸੱਚੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਨਿੱਤਰ ਕੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਪਹਿਲੀ: ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਸਮਰੱਥਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੀਮਤਾਵਾਂ ਬੱਚੇ ਜੀਨਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੂਰਵਜਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਰਸ਼ੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਦੂਜੀ: ਬੱਚੇ ਇੱਕ ਕੋਰਾ ਕਾਗਜ਼ ਦੇ ਸਾਮਾਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੁਹਾਵੇ ਮਾਨਵੀ ਰੰਗ ਭਰੇ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪਹਿਲਾ ਮੁੱਦਾ ਅੱਜ ਦੀ ਤਾਰੀਖ ਤੀਕਰ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਹੀ ਹੈ। ਕੱਲ ਬਾਰੇ ਕੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ। ਦੂਜਾ ਮੁੱਦਾ ਪੂਰੇ ਦਾ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਮਾਂ‎,‎ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਾਜ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਬੱਚੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੋਚਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਰੰਗ ਭਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਹ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਸੰਪੂਰਨ ਤੌਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਸਵੀਕਾਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸੁਥਰੇ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੇ ਸਮਾਜ ਦੀ ਸਿਰਜਣਾ ਲਈ ਮਾਨਵਾਦੀ ਗੁਣ ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਦੇ ਵਾਰਸਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਕੋ ਨੱਕ ਭਰੇ ਹੋਣੇ ਚਾਹੀਦੇ ਹਨ। ਜੋ ਭਰੇ ਜਾਣੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਸੰਭਵ ਤੇ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਸਾਡੀ ਸਵੈ ਲਾਲਸਾ ਨੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।

ਦਫਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਿੱਤ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ। ਕੰਮ ਦੀਆਂ। ਪ੍ਰੀਵਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ। ਪ੍ਰਵਾਸੀ ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੱੜੇ ਸਰੋਕਾਰਾਂ ਸੰਗ ਸੰਵਾਦ। ਅਚਾਨਕ ਮੈਂਨੂੰ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਾਥੀ ਕਹਿਣ ਲੱਗਾ ਕਿ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਇੰਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਇਥੇ ਆਇਆਂ‎,‎ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਹੱਸਦਾ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਏ? ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਚੁੱਪ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।

ਪ੍ਰੀਵਾਰਕ ਮਾਹੌਲ `ਚ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਬੈਠਿਆਂ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਵਾਸੀ ਅਵਾਰਡਜ ਨਾਇਟ ਬਾਰੇ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ ਕਿ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਸੱਭ ਤੋਂ ਚੰਗਾ ਕੀ ਲਗਾ? ਉਹ ਕਹਿਣ ਲੱਗਾ ਕਿ ਆਪਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਂ ਰਮਤਾ ਸੱਭ ਤੋਂ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਾ। ਇਸ ਬਹਾਨੇ ਘੜੀ ਹੱਸ ਤਾਂ ਲਿਆ।
ਮੇਰਾ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਮਿਲਿਆ। ਕਹਿੰਦਾ‎,‎’ ਸਰ ਕਾਹਦਾ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਆਏ ਹਾਂ। ਕਲੈਸਟਰੋਲ ਵੱਧ ਗਿਆ ਏ। ਬੀ਼ ਪੀ਼ ਦੀ ਗੋਲੀ ਰੋਜ ਖਾਈਦੀ ਹੈ। ਪਿਛਲੇ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਬੀਬੀ ਇੰਡੀਆ ਤੋਂ ਆਈ ਸੀ। ਕੱਲ ਇੱਕ ਦਮ ਸ਼ੂਗਰ ਘੱਟ ਗਈ। ਐਂਬੂਲਸ ਸੱਦ ਕੇ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਪਹੁੰਚਾਣਾ ਪਿਆ’।

A few years ago, one of my dear Atheist Humanist friends who live in America met a charming young Muslim woman. They started dating, fell in love and in a few months decided to get married. The relationship seemed wonderful, as they were both affectionate and respectful of each other’s philosophies and lifestyles.

A NEW QUESTION HAS CROPPED UP. IS IT DUE TO vanity that I do not believe in the existence of an omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient God? I had never imagined that I would ever have to confront such a question. But conversation with some friends has given me a hint that certain of my friends - if I am do not claiming too much in thinking them to be so - are inclined to conclude from the brief contact they have had with me, that it was too much on my part to deny the existence of God and that there was a certain amount of vanity that actuated my disbelief.
